Flibanserin (Addyi) Overview
Flibanserin (100 mg) is the first and only officially approved treatment for acquired reduced sexual desire in premenopausal women. This non-hormonal medication is suitable for women experiencing low sexual desire not influenced by circumstances, with no prior issues related to sexual desire.
Flibanserin is not intended for women who have gone through menopause, men, or children. It is also not suitable for improving sexual performance.
Indications and Usage
Flibanserin is used to treat reduced sexual desire in premenopausal women who have not experienced diminished sexual desire in the past. The condition should not be due to:
- Physical or mental illness
- Relationship problems
- Use of other medications
Flibanserin is not recommended for women post-menopause.
Important Information
- Do not drink alcohol while taking flibanserin.
- Do not use flibanserin if you are allergic to it.
- Certain medications can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when used with flibanserin.
- It is not known if flibanserin harms an unborn baby or if it passes into breast milk.
- Flibanserin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How to Take Flibanserin
Follow all instructions on your prescription label. Take flibanserin only at bedtime. It may lower blood pressure, which can cause dizziness. Improvement in symptoms may take up to 8 weeks.
Store the medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip it and take the medicine the following day at bedtime.
What to Avoid
- Do not consume alcohol while taking flibanserin.
- Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they may interact with flibanserin.
- Do not take supplements containing ginkgo, resveratrol, or St. John’s wort.
- Flibanserin may impair thinking or reactions, so avoid getting up quickly from sitting or lying down.
Dosing Information
The typical adult dose for treating reduced sexual desire is
100 mg orally once a day at bedtime. The medication should be discontinued after 8 weeks if there is no improvement in symptoms. Flibanserin is not intended to enhance sexual performance and is not indicated for use in postmenopausal women or men.
